Solar Roofing Shingles
There was a time when the green or energy efficient house had a distinctive kind of look, what with those wind turbines whirring every which way at the coming of a strong breeze and the reflections of the sun coming from those huge dark panels collecting sunlight, sticking out like a sore thumb up on the roof or in a prominent place in the yard or garden.
Solar energy technology has come a long way since then. The first solar panels that were produced were heavy and large flat panels that needed a couple of people to carry them up to the roof when installing them. The other option was to install them in an unobstructed yard space. The solar houses were an eyeful. Designers had to be creative in the incorporation of these panels in to a home or building. Nowadays, the scientists and technology experts have come up with solar roofing shingles. These can now be incorporated into any shingled roof without much intrusion, design-wise as well as construction-wise. Like the old panels, solar roofing shingles are made out of photovoltaic cells that capture the sun’s energy and convert it into power for a household’s energy needs. The difference is the use of thin film solar cells instead of the solar wafers. Then there are solid panels in a strip, and the semi rigid ones. All these have the appearance of asphalt shingles. The installation process is also easier with this new development.
Using renewable energy resources are a big help in the issue of global warming. The sun is a logical choice when thinking about renewable energy solutions. It is free, it is accessible to anyone, and it is most available. The steps in energy conversion from solar power to electricity need these solar cells. By improving solar technology through these solar roofing shingles, the transition to renewable energy use just got easier. In the fight against global warming, the invention of new technology and the improvement of existing technologies and innovations are of primary importance. Aside from the harnessing of solar energy with the use of solar systems, there is the harnessing of wind energy using wind turbines. Then there is the hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal energy options.
Any ordinary person can do his part against global warming and climate change by opting to go the renewable energy road. The government even gives grants and rebates to personal projects such as these; that’s how serious we all are in our fight against this global problem. In addition to these incentives, the home improvement move towards solar roofing will surely lessen electricity bills. The immediate environment will benefit too, as solar power is a clean and quiet kind of power. Aesthetics is not now an issue, as the shingles have effectively solved the problem with appearances. Nowadays, a green house can look like any other house, or better. But the impact will be felt more through time, and on a global scale. Definitely it will not be through mere appearances, but it helps.
